Still mid-twenties!

Another birthday approaches.... and for the first time i'm actually dreading what that represents. Another year older, and i have even less excuses to get away with immature, childish behaviour that i tend to display all too often.

The timing this year was excellent...well i mean the timing of my rotation to Sakhalin was excellent, as i tend to celebrate my birthday on the same day each year! I arrived home the day before i was flying into Switzerland. I met up with mum back at home in the Netherlands, who had just got in the day before from Turkey. Mirjam had left already to Switzerland to have the weekend with her family.

So we head off to Switzerland the next day, and met up with Mirjam and her parents. It was a long awaiting opportunity to introduce my mum to my "Swiss connection". We spent the first day in Moriken, with all of Mirjam's family. We enjoyed an authentic home-made Swiss dinner at the family home. The next day we jumped in the car - mum, mirjam, mirjam's mum Ruth, and I - to head to the southern end of Switzerland to their holiday home. The house is in the Ticine region, near the town of Lugano. A magical spot, and once we had passed through the central Swiss mountains at Gothard, the weather was spectacular.

The four days we spent in Migeligia were absolute bliss. We spent a lot of time relaxing in the sun, an overdue experience having missed its brief appearances in Netherlands this year. We took several walks around the beautiful swiss mountains, which was a welcomed combination of fresh air and beautiful scenery.

On my birthday, we spent the morning sun baking at the cottage, before Ruth and Mirjam prepared a wonderful lunch, complete with chocolate birthday cake. That afternoon we took a drive down to the lakeside town of Lugano. Here we did some shopping, mum got her own Swiss watch, and i bought chocolate! We took a walk alongside the lake, and had a beer in one of the stunning plazas. That evening, Ruth invited us to a favourite grotto of hers, to experience some authentic southern swiss food. Yum!

The next day took a gondola ride to the top of Monte Lema, from where you can see over Italy and Switzerland. It was a lovely warm and clear day, and all around was breaktaking views. It was really a feeling like being on top of the world. We chose to hike down the mountain, which was a beautiful hike of around 2 hours and remarkedly tiring! But well worth it.

The evening was spent in the cottage, by the open fire with a glass of wine and a lovely home-made meal.

On Saturday we travelled back to Moriken in the north of Switzerland to spend a night at Mirjam parents house with the whole family. Again a fun family evening with Mirjams cousins and immediate family.

It was a really relaxing week away. And it was so refreshing to get some fresh air and relax in the sun. At the end of the week i felt well rested and even managed a tan. A really nice birthday and a great opportunity for mum to meet and spend time with Mirjam's parents.
